Fire Extinguishers – For projects Doggett Company does not self-perform, General Contractors typically furnish fire extinguishers throughout the entire project. However, wherever Doggett Employees are performing assigned task responsibility to ensure adequate fire protection, including appropriate fire extinguishers, are provided.
- Fire extinguisher rated not less than 2A shall be provided for each three thousand (3,000 square) feet of the protected building area. Travel distance from any point of the protected area to the nearest fire extinguisher shall not exceed 100 feet.
- Fire extinguishers should be located on each floor and adjacent to stairwells on multi-story buildings.
- Fire extinguishers, rated not less than 10B, shall be provided within 50 feet of wherever more than five gallons of flammable or combustible liquids of five pounds of flammable gas are being used on the jobsite.
- Carbon Tetra Chloride and other toxic vaporizing fire extinguishers are prohibited.
- Fire extinguishers shall be inspected monthly in accordance with NFPA No. 10, “Portable Fire Extinguishers.”
- Fire extinguishers shall receive an annual maintenance check in accordance with 29 CFR 1910. 1579(e)(3).
- For the purpose of how to use a fire extinguisher, the acronym P. A. S. S. shall serve as a training tool with the:
“P” standing for “Pull the pin”; the
“A” standing for “Aim at the base of the fire”; the first “S” standing for “Squeeze the handle”; and the last “S” standing for “Sweep from side to side”.

- The fire extinguisher shall be selected for the type of material that may be burning. The following chart is available to select the proper fire extinguisher for the type of fire in question:
- CLASS A – Paper, wood and cloth
- CLASS B – Flammable or combustible liquid, gases, and greases
- CLASS C – Energized electrical equipment
- CLASS D – Combustible metals
If you discover a fire: Tell another person immediately. Call or have them call 911 and a supervisor.
- If the fire is small (such as a wastebasket fire) and there is minimal smoke, you may try to put it out with a fire extinguisher.
- If the fire grows or there is thick smoke, do not continue to fight the fire. Tell other employees in the area to evacuate.
- Go to the designated assembly point outside the building.
